We believe that God exists in eternal communion. Together, Father, Son and Holy Spirit are united in one being with no beginning and no end. Human beings, likewise, were created by God in God’s image for the purpose of communion with another human being.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church states, “The Christian family is a communion of persons, a sign and image of the communion of the Father and the Son in the Holy Spirit” (CCC 2205). The Sacrament of Marriage is “unitive, indissoluble and calls us to be completely open to fertility.” Christian marriage at its finest is a reflection of God’s self-giving love expressed between the love of two people.
The sanctity of Holy Matrimony is enriched in the Sacramental life of the Church. However, by God's Mercy and Grace the Catholic Church understands that circumstances sometimes make it difficult for a couple to follow the laws of the Church and they may enter into licit but invalid marriages by civil ceremony, common law, or a ceremony outside of the Church. Over time such couples may come to realize a desire to have their marriage blessed in the Catholic Church. This is called Convalidation for it "validates" the sacramentality of an existing marriage. There is more information HERE.
Sadly, some marriages, even those made in the Catholic Church, lack the essential elements for it to truly be a sacramental marriage. In cases, like these, which end in divorce, a couple may wish to have their former marriage annuled by the Catholic Church. Annulments involve a process to determine if the marriage lacked the proper character necessary for it to have been a valid sacramental marriage. Many have found this process to be very helpful and healing. If you wish to learn more please contact the parish office at admin@olic-tome.org
